March brought both progress and difficult realities for Rotifunk Hospital.
On the positive side, repaired oxygen concentrators were returned to service, restoring lifesaving respiratory support for patients. Only one unit was deemed too outdated to repair. At the same time, pharmacy, maternity, and laboratory supplies were replenished through a single-payment medical supply fund — ensuring continuity of care.
Leadership transitions also marked the month. A new Bishop was installed during the United Methodist Annual Conference, where hospital representatives joined in celebration and met with the SLAC Health Board, reinforcing Rotifunk’s place within the national health network.
Long-standing infrastructure concerns persisted. Engineers and plumbers assessed the hospital’s water system, a recurring challenge that affects surgical care, maternity services, and daily sanitation. Reports and cost estimates were still pending, but the need for long-term solutions was clear.
Funding constraints forced hard decisions. With reduced external support, hospital leadership proposed limiting outreach services and reconsidering feeding programs for non-Madonna patients. Mission of Hope encouraged continuation of in-patient feeding and focused Madonna outreach for pregnant women — prioritizing the most vulnerable while maintaining program integrity.
One of the most serious challenges involved government tax compliance. The National Revenue Authority assessed penalties related to unpaid employee income taxes dating back several years. While the hospital has begun current compliance, Mission of Hope made clear that it would not provide assistance for past penalties — underscoring the importance of local accountability and sustainable governance.
These moments are not easy, but they reflect a hospital navigating complexity with increasing professionalism, transparency, and resolve. Progress in Rotifunk is real — and so are the challenges that make continued partnership essential.
