The Archer-Hatfield Memorial Hospital is the primary source of medical care for more than 145,000 people in Rotifunk and the surrounding region of Sierra Leone. Once a respected rural hospital, the facility was nearly destroyed during the civil war and struggled for years with damaged buildings, unreliable electricity, limited equipment, and a severe shortage of medical staff. Mothers and newborns suffered the most, with preventable complications often becoming fatal.
Today, the hospital is undergoing a remarkable transformation.
Led by a dedicated Sierra Leonean medical team—and strengthened by Mission of Hope’s support—the hospital is delivering safe, high-quality care across a growing range of services. Maternity care, newborn support, emergency treatment, laboratory diagnostics, inpatient care, and outpatient services now operate with increasing reliability and professionalism. Maternal and infant deaths have fallen dramatically, a testament to the skill and compassion of the doctors, nurses, and midwives who serve the community.
Essential improvements such as clean water, stable power, and modern equipment have restored the hospital’s ability to treat the region’s most urgent health challenges, including malaria, respiratory illness, malnutrition, and pregnancy complications.
Mission of Hope remains committed to ensuring the hospital continues to strengthen and expand—providing a lifeline of health, dignity, and hope for families across rural Sierra Leone.
