Starting the Year with Transparency, Care, and Commitment

The new year began at Rotifunk Hospital with both reflection and renewed commitment.

In late December, Rev. James Boye-Caulker was celebrated at the hospital, honoring his longstanding ties to Rotifunk and the encouragement his leadership brings to the community. His connections and support continue to strengthen the hospital’s relationships across the region.

January also marked an important step toward greater transparency. Hospital administrator Lumeh shared a detailed income and expense statement for December 2024, providing a clearer picture of internal revenue generated through patient registrations, pharmacy sales, lab services, ultrasounds, and surgeries. The report showed $1,011 in internal income — modest, but essential for daily operations.

To underscore ongoing needs, Lumeh shared a video of depleted pharmacy shelves, supporting a request for a one-time replenishment of medications and medical supplies. Reliable access to essential drugs remains a constant challenge in rural healthcare.

Infrastructure concerns continued to surface. Termite damage required rebuilding laboratory cabinets, and Mission of Hope authorized funds for an engineering assessment of water-flow issues affecting the maternity ward, operating theater, and guest house — all critical areas for patient safety.

Amid these challenges, compassion remained central. Support was arranged for the daughter of a senior ward nurse following a family loss, and one Board member stepped forward to cover her school tuition for the coming year.

The hospital also looked ahead, with a proposed 2025 Memorandum of Understanding shared for review — establishing predictable monthly support and setting the foundation for the year to come.

January reminded us that strong healthcare systems are built on transparency, planning, and care for both patients and staff.
